Yan Wen Chang

X in Residence is pleased to welcome Yan Wen Chang as our third artist in residence.

Yan Wen Chang (b. 1993) immigrated to Toronto, alone, from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in 2011 at the age of 17. Chang is a recent MFA graduate in Studio Art from the University of Guelph since July 2022 and received her BFA in Drawing and Painting at OCAD University in 2015. She was Robert Fones’ studio and painting assistant for three years. 

Chang recently exhibited her MFA Thesis Exhibition entitled “A. Dream” at General Hardware Contemporary, Toronto, in June 2022.  Her work has been included in exhibitions and public art projects at Pushmi Pullyu, Toronto, A.D. NYC, New York, sinkhole projects, Baltimore, and Queenspecific, Toronto. Chang’s 33-foot public billboard entitled “same problem my father had and what he dreamed” is currently on view at Hamilton Artists’ Inc.’s Cannon Project Wall until May 2023. Chang will be exhibiting alongside Katie Bethune-Leamen at Susan Hobbs Gallery, Toronto, in Jan 2023.
